Kick-off meeting of the "Physics goals and performance reach" group (17 May 2013)
Some notes on this meeting.
* important to prepare a common document by ATLAS and CMS to show
the consistency - this is crucial also for the Snowmass preparation
* we should not be too ambitious in the choice of the benchmark
channels destined to full simulation studies
* we should start listing the key channels that are crucial both
for the physics case and for changeling the detector performance;
afterwards we see what we can do for the simulation
* trigger menu: we mean mainly the thresholds for physics objetcs
that we would like to have for optimal selection of the physics
channels that we want to study at HL-LHC; the same holds for eta
coverage of the same objects.
* in the discussion of the various channels, we should understand which
ones will be most likely dominated by systematic uncertainties, rather
than from statistical uncertainties. The discussion on systematic
uncertainties should include the ones from theory as well.
* some channels that certainly require high lumi are H-->muumuu,
HH-->bbgg. Probably also VBF H-->tautau.
Importance to measure also ratios , for example H-->gg/H-->ZZ
* HF: importance to also include top FCNC together with "classical"
B-physics studies from LHCb
* similarly for HI: we should integrate the ALICE physics program
with plans by ATLAS and CMS for HI physics
