Non-Anbelian strings in Yang-Mills theories and beyond: 2D - 4D correspondence, spin-orbit interaction generating unexpected Goldstone modes, and all that.
I start from a review of Non-Anbelian strings in various Yang-Mills theories, supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric. Two-dimensional models emerging on the string world sheet exhibit intriguing dynamics and can be used to obtain information on (BPS protected sectors of) four-dimensional bulk theories. A class of bulk theories with spin-orbit interaction is interesting for condensed matter physics. Unexpected Goldstone modes appear in this case.
In the standard situation the spontaneous breaking of the Poincare group by flux tubes (strings) generate only two zero modes localized on the string and associated with the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance. In the case of order parameters carrying spatial indices this is not true. Additional zero (or quasizero) modes can appear due to the tensorail nature of order parameters.
