Night Train (Pociąg)
Directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz (Poland, 1959) 93 minutes
Two strangers, Jerzy and Marta, accidentally end up holding tickets for the same sleeping chamber on an overnight train to the Baltic Sea coast. Also on board is Marta's spurned lover, who will not leave her alone. When the police enter the train in search of a murderer on the run, rumours fly and everything seems to point toward one of the main characters as the culprit. This amorphous and ambiguous tale seems to lack direct references to any history or political situation allowing several levels of reading. Set in a Hitchcockian atmosphere, the unimaginably tight shots in the train and the overall sense of claustrophobia evoke a sense of individual fate in a society being crushed by overwhelming external forces. Night Train is allegory of misfits among a society of passengers, a society that is predictable, suspicious of individuality, and eager to punish. The whole Poland is escaping though the night to the end of the line, all with a soundtrack sung by the fantastic voice of Wanda Warska.
