Description
The University of Athens (UoA) was responsible for the wiring of about
30,000 MDTs (Monitored Drift Tubes), which were then used for building the
ATLAS-BIS (Barrel Inner Small) Muon Chambers. These tubes were precision
drift tubes of finished length of 1671.5 mm. The 112 ATLAS-BIS chambers
form part of the inner layer of the Muon Spectrometer and are already
installed in the ATLAS pit. The necessary tooling together with the procedure
followed for the wiring will be presented. The wire had to be placed with an
accuracy of less than 20 μm. The production took over 4 years during which
it was constantly monitored by specialized quality checking tasks. Emphasis
will be given to the experience obtained and to the performance, together
with the quality assurance of the total number of the 30,000 tubes.
