The first of a new series of seminars proposed by the Medical Applications Team.
Dr. John H. Lawrence successfully treated the first patient with proton therapy in September 1954, the very month and year CERN was created. The treatment of certain cancer, metabolic, and neurological diseases followed with protons and alpha particle beams produced in his brother Ernest's Nobel-Prize-winning accelerators. Recent successes in the treatment of specific cancers with heavier ions such as carbon are being reported in several continents. This presentation will briefly review the six decades of entwined histories of CERN and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in developing this field, and their dual efforts to continue to develop the scientific basis, technology and co-ordination support and training opportunities needed to meet the challenges for the future.
John H. Lawrence a réalisé avec succès le premier traitement de thérapie par protons sur un patient en septembre 1954, le mois même de la naissance du CERN. Ce premier essai a abouti par la suite au traitement de certains cancers et maladies métaboliques et neurologiques par des faisceaux de protons et de particules alpha provenant d’un de ces accélérateurs dont l’invention avait valu à son frère Ernest un prix Nobel. Aujourd’hui, on fait état sur plusieurs continents de récentes avancées dans le traitement de certains cancers au moyen de particules plus lourdes, comme les ions carbone. La conférence retracera brièvement soixante ans d’histoire du CERN et du Laboratoire national Lawrence Berkeley dans ce domaine, en évoquant les efforts déployés par l’un et par l’autre pour continuer à faire progresser les bases scientifiques, la technologie et la coordination, ainsi que les formations nécessaires pour relever les défis futurs.
