ECFA-LHC Experiments WS 2014
PG1 - Heavy Ions preparatory meeting #1 -- July 7 2014
Present: Dainese, Cole, Nguyen, Nisati, Roland, Trzupek
Excused: Vagnoni
General introduction, see material in agenda
General discussion (mainly triggered by Brian):
- Should we consider to increase the L_int requirements for PbPb after LS2? current projections for Run-2 suggest that for Runs-3+4 more than 10/nb could be within reach. We should show what we gain in physics reach by having 20 or 25/nb instead of 10.
- Should we bring to the WS the physics case for light-ion running? e.g. Ar+Ar. We would need a projection of the L_int for one run, to make a statement on the physics reach
- What about pA studies with p+Ar, d+Pb or alpha+Pb, to understand interplay between initial conditions and collective effects in pA?
- We agreed to contact J. Jowett to ask him for projections on L_int for PbPb, pPb and ArAr after LS2. Ideally, it would be good to have this information before end of July
ALICE: new material focused on forward rapidity studies, of heavy flavour with Muon Forward Tracker (TDR end of 2014, for installation in LS2) and of saturation with Forward Calorimeter (still at the level of internal discussion, but performance studies are ongoing, for installation in LS3)
ATLAS: possible studies for WS: performance for PbPb 10/nb with ATLAS upgrades; focus on Ar+Ar, e.g. what could be done with 1 month running of Ar+Ar (need a reference value for L_int); focus on p+Pb (e.g. hard probes)
CMS: full simulation studies probably not possible on timescale of the WS; could make some theory or extrapolation-based estimation, maybe for p+Pb (hard probes) or lighter ions.
LHCb: Vincenzo will convey via email the input from LHCb.
Future meetings:
- try to have a meeting with J. Jowett before the end of July
- then one meeting in late Sept and one on early Oct to monitor the preparation for the WS
