Description

The beta decay properties of N>50 nuclei close to 78Ni are dominated by the parity change between major proton and neutron shells. The interplay between first forbidden and Gamow teller transitions determines the decay half-life and neutron branching ratio.

In order to elucidate the role of Gamow-Teller transitions in the delayed neutron emission the neutron spectra of 28 precursors was measured at Oak Ridge National Laboratory with the time of flight detector VANDLE.The observation of high-intensity high-energy neutron emission in 83,84Ga will be discussed. A simplified shell model calculation of the Gamow-teller decay across the N=50 shell gap will be presented.
