High-density fast scintillators crystals, such LaBr3(Ce) have become key instruments in Nuclear Physics measurements. They exhibit high efficiency for gamma detection, good energy resolution and fast response. Their excellent time resolution allows timing measurements down to few picoseconds range. Nuclear level lifetimes from 5 ps to 50 ns can be therefore accessed with these detectors.
R&D activities devoted to the optimization of the time resolution of Ultra Fast Scintillators detectors by the proper selection of the fast photomultiplier tube and a fine tune of the Constant Fraction Discrimination (CFD) and high voltage will be presented in the seminar. The timing properties of the crystals were studied by delayed coincidences measurements against a reference BaF2 detector, whose time response is well known.
