Abstract
The DT group is currently involved in the development of a large tracking detector for the LHCb experiment. The detector is based on 11’000 km of scintillating fibres and shall be installed in 2019.
We will discuss the principles, technology and properties of scintillating fibres and how they can be used as particle detectors. A main challenge is to make sure that the detector will maintain its initial performance also after several years in a hostile radiation environment.
