MedAustron is a new synchrotron-based ion beam therapy centre, located in Wiener Neustadt (Austria). It comprises of 3 rooms, for treating cancer patients with clinical beams of protons (60-250 MeV) and carbon ions (120-400 MeV/u), as well as one research room, receiving the same clinical beams and research beams of protons up to 800 MeV. Installation of the main accelerator components has been completed and beam commissioning of the Synchrotron started in march this year. Recently, the first proton beam was transported successfully into one of the irradiation rooms. This marked an important milestone for the commissioning of the accelerator, as it proved the technical functionality of the entire accelerator chain from the source up to the treatment room. The talk will present an overview on the MedAustron Ion Beam Therapy Centre, concentrating on the results obtained during the on-going commissioning process and giving an outlook on the upcoming commissioning activities.
