Description

The first event of the International Year of Light will be held on Wednesday 4 February at 6.30 p.m. at the Globe of Science and Innovation. It will feature an award ceremony for the winners of the PopScience physics in poetry competition (Italian, English, French and Spanish categories) as well as an exhibition of drawings made by the Lycée International de Ferney-Voltaire students for the competition. A public talk entitled “Light and luminosity: The concept of Light in Physics from Einstein to the LHC” will be given by the head of the HL-LHC project, Lucio Rossi, with the participation of Giorgio Apollinari, Director for the LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP) via videoconference from Fermilab (USA).

Entrance free but seating is limited to a maximum of 300 people and therefore booking is mandatory. Book your seat through the reservations website : http://iyl2015-registration.eventbrite.com

AWARD CEREMONY OF THE EUROPEAN RESEARCHERS’ NIGHT POETRY COMPETITION
Award ceremony of the POPSCIENCE Poetry Competition, launched at the 2014 Researchers Night in 4 languages (English, French, Italian and Spanish),inspired by the physics of the LHC and beyond: which attracted over 200 participants. Special participation: 52 pupils of the Collège International de Ferney-Voltaire, who produced drawings in addition to their poems. Their works have been assembled into an e-book that will be presented by poet Catherine Fuchs, from Geneva, during the award ceremony. Introduction by Lucio Rossi on Light in Physics. This part will be in French.

LIGHT and LUMINOSITY, from Einstein to LHC
After an introduction on the concept of light in physics, this talk will focus on CERN’s High Luminosity LHC project, aiming at extending the discovery potential of CERN’s flagship accelerator by increasing its “luminosity” (ie the number of particles that can be squeezed inside the accelerator to maximize the number of collisions). To achieve this objective, many new technologies are being developed at CERN and many collaborating institutes worldwide, especially in the field of superconductivity. Lucio Rossi, the main speaker, is the head of the HL-LHC project, based at CERN. Giorgio Apollinari, Director for the LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP) will speak through a videoconference from Fermilab (USA). The event is webcast live and will be followed by Fermilab and other institutes in the USA.
Speakers: Giorgio Apollinari (Fermi National Accelerator Lab. (US)), Prof. Lucio Rossi (CERN)
