Description
The question of the origin of cosmic rays above 1014 eV remains unanswered. I will review data - all taken using the extensive air shower technique - on the energy spectrum, arrival direction and mass composition from 1014 eV to the highest energies, and describe some of the deductions made about their origin. At the highest energies the surprise is that particles of 1020 eV and beyond are seen at all: I will outline some of the attempts made to explain them and the new experiments being developed to extend our knowledge of them.
