Cosmic Rays from 10<SUP>14</SUP> eV to 10<SUP>20</SUP> eV and beyond

The question of the origin of cosmic rays above 10¹⁴ eV remains unanswered. I will review data - all taken using the extensive air shower technique - on the energy spectrum, arrival direction and mass composition from 10¹⁴ eV to the highest energies, and describe some of the deductions made about their origin. At the highest energies the surprise is that particles of 10²⁰ eV and beyond are seen at all: I will outline some of the attempts made to explain them and the new experiments being developed to extend our knowledge of them.
