Description
As the experimentalists and the accelerator physicists are fully immersed in the detector and LHC construction, theoretical physicists are likewise very busy preparing all tools required to properly interpret and exploit the data generated by the LHC. They believe, on the basis of the experience gained at LEP, HERA and at the Tevatron, that they can reasonably well anticipate how the known physics will manifests itself in the LHC data; they also believe they can predict how events generated by possible new Physics (say supersymmetry, or the Higgs boson) will look like. These predictions are all based on sets of tools commonly known as "Monte Carlo (MC) event generators".
This 4-week long Workshop, jointly organised by the TH and EP Divisions, will bring together over 100 world experts on MC developments and LHC physicists, for a global and critical evaluation of the state of the art in the field. Theorists and experimentalists will brainstorm on ways to verify the correctness of the existing tools before and after the data have become available, on ways to improve the accuracy and generality of the predictions, and on the best possible ways to integrate these tools into their complex software environments.

Ten working groups will be in action:
•Matrix element tools
•(N)NLO tools
•Tools for electroweak physics
•Parton Distribution Functions
•MC's for new physics
•Heavy quark and tau decay packages
•Minimum bias, Underlying event, and MC tunings
•Tools for Heavy Ion Physics
•CLHEP and related tools
•C++ codes

The details of the agenda, which will be updated daily as the working groups develop their activities, can be followed from the Workshop web page, http://mlm.home.cern.ch/mlm/mcwshop03/mcwshop.html
During the first week of the Workshop, a series of introductory lectures on MC tools, mostly dedicated to PhD students and young Fellows, will be given by Mike Seymour in the context of the Academic Training lecture series.
A general Introduction, with reports from all 4 LHC experiments and with introductions from the first working groups starting their activity during the first week of the Workshop, will take place on the first day, July 7, with the following agenda ( http://agenda.cern.ch/fullAgenda.php?ida=a031444):
