Description
This presentation will consider how the network used to be how it is today, and how it needs to be. Major issues are transparency, addressability, and security and perceived service quality. The talk will discuss whether there is an integration strategy for quality of service (QOS), what QOS solutions we have today, and what is still missing for QOS. It will also cover the need for and prospects of IPv6. Finally it will consider tactical solutions in use today. Bio: Brian E. Carpenter is Program Director, Internet Standards and Technology, for IBM. He is currently based at iCAIR, the international Centre for Advanced Internet Research, where he is also Chief Architect. Previously he led the networking group here at CERN from 1985 to 1996. He holds a first degree in physics and a Ph.D. in computer science, and is an M.I.E.E. He is an active participant in the Internet Engineering Task Force and a member of the Internet Architecture Board, which he chaired from July 1995 to March 2000. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Internet Society, and a member of the Board of the Unicode Consortium.
