Beam-beam effects in RHIC were observed in operation and in dedicated experiments with both gold ions and protons. Observations include measured beam-beam induced tune shifts as well as lifetime and emittance growth measurements with and without beam-beam interaction.
During ramps unequal radio frequencies in the two rings cause the crossing points to move longitudinally. Thus bunches experience beam-beam interactions only in intervals and the transverse tunes are modulated. RHIC is the only existing hadron collider in which strong-strong beam-beam effects can be expected. Beam-beam driven coherent transverse oscillation modes could be created in an experiment and were also seen during routine operation.
