Feasibility Study for an LHC Upgrade

A task force has investigated a possible staged upgrade of the LHC and of its injectors with a view to increasing the nominal luminosity by an order of magnitude and/or the beam energy by about a factor two. Several scenarios have been considered, including minor and major hardware modifications in the LHC and its injectors, limitations caused by the beam-beam interaction and the option of colliding long super-bunches with a large crossing angle. The conclusions of this feasibility study are discussed.
