Description
Since a couple of years experiments are being performed at the SPS to measure resonance driving terms caused by controlled sources of nonlinearities. Single particle theory predicts that these terms can be determined by harmonic analysis of BPM data recorded after applying single kicks. This analysis works equally well for linear and non-linear diagnostics of accelerators. A brief theoretical introduction will be given. In particular, two new aspects will be covered: the longitudinal variation of the driving terms and the consequences of considering particle distributions instead of a single particle. Results of the experiments will be presented, including direct measurements of resonance driving terms and the comparison with simulation of the theoretical model of the accelerator.
