Description
The AdS/CFT correspondence asserts an exact mapping between supersymmetric Yang-Mills conformal field theory and the IIB superstring on an AdS background. Recently it has been observed that a certain Penrose limit of the AdS spacetime isolates a sector of the IIB string theory which can be solved in string perturbation theory and many interesting questions can be addressed by explicit computation. In the Yang-Mills theory, this corresponds to a simultaneous large quantum number and large N limit. Some of the interesting features of this limit will be discussed, including recent results on operator mixing and the implications for loop amplitudes in string theory.
