OverSite: to implement and maintain your web site architecture

Why do so many web sites fail? A major reason is that users struggle to find information they know exists, due to poor organisation of information, poor labelling, confusing navigation systems, inconsistent page layout, no table of contents, no search, etc.
OverSite, a tool developed in IT/API, allows a sitewide definition of an information organisation, from which various kinds of page-dependant navigational information, as well as a site-wide table of contents and/or section sub-contents, may be automatically derived and kept up to date. In addition, OverSite offers a) site templates, or Look&Feels, appropriate for the typically content-intensive CERN web sites, and b) pre-configured dynamic web list applications (e.g. action lists, meetings and minutes, a workbook) within the context of a simple CGI framework.
This functionality is not available in the current crop of web authoring tools, in particular in the market leading Macromedia Dreamweaver, MS FrontPage or NetObjects Fusion. OverSite does not re-implement any general page editing or site management features that are offered by such commercially available web authoring tools. Instead, it takes advantage of one of them, namely Dreamweaver, to
supply this basic but important functionality.
The presentation will first discuss the pressing problem faced by all projects, that is how to organise and present information content on the web so as to meet the needs of those who seek it.
These issues are independent of which tool will eventually be adopted to implement and manage the planned web. The presentation will continue by showing how the features of OverSite, combined with Dreamweaver, may be employed to address presentation, organisation and management issues identified earlier. The discussion will be supported with examples of real sites developed using OverSite.
This tool is developed in IT/API, to meet the needs of group projects, and at the same time to offer the same advantages to other CERN groups and projects.
