New, solid-state approaches to high power switching are being applied in applications such as radar modulators, semi-conductor manufacturing, and food processing and high-energy physics. Diversified Technologies, Inc. has patented a method of load sharing among series, solid state devices that has resulted in the design of pulse modulators and power supplies up to 70MW, housed in compact tanks less than 150 cu ft in volume.
The new systems eliminate many of the traditional problems associated with high power electronics. For example, there is no longer a need for special crowbar circuits, because the solid state circuits are both opening and closing switches, able to be opened quickly in the event of an arc. The use of solid state components improves system reliability by eliminating much of the 'housekeeping' required to monitor and tune tube-based components. In addition, the dramatic reduction in the size of these devices from their traditional counterparts saves users significantly on infrastructure costs.
DTI will present an overview of the company's solid state technology, and describe recent success at CPI in Palo Alto, CA. At CPI, DTI installed a 140kV,70MW modulator and a 160kV, 3.2MW CW switching buck regulator power supply. The systems are employed in the testing of high power klystrons - testing that would not be possible using traditional, tube-based systems. Results from klystron/gyrotron operation with these systems will be presented, along with other applications of this solid state technology to high power RF systems.
