The LHC will accelerate and collide beams with unprecedented stored beam energy. The handling of this stored energy in the super-conducting environment of the LHC requires a sophisticated collimation system. The design and construction of this system is organized in the LHC Collimation Project. In order to meet the demanding requirements, it is foreseen to follow a phased approach with three stages of collimation and dedicated betatron and momentum cleaning. The different phases are discussed and the phase 1 collimation system is described in more detail.
