Description
Public distributed computing projects use resources that are insecure, heterogeneous, unreliable, sporadically available, and expensive to communicate with. It's also hard to persuade people to share their PC. But the magnitude of the resource - roughly 100 million privately-owned PCs on the Internet today - makes it tempting to try, and projects like GIMPs, distributed.net and SETI@home have demonstrated the feasibility of the approach.
We are currently developing BOINC, a software platform for public distributed computing. BOINC will support a wide range of applications, including those with large storage or communication requirements. It will allow independent projects to share overlapping resource pools, will allow participants to control the sharing of their resources, and will use resources on all platforms.

SETI@home (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu) is a research project, based at U.C. Berkeley's Space Science Laboratory, that uses Internet-connected computers to analyze radio-telescope data in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). Since its public launch in May 1999, over 5,000,000 people have participated, contributing 1.7 million years of computer time and making SETI@home the largest computation every performed.
As project director, I did fundraising (about M thus far, from a variety of private and public sources), hired and managed a team of 6 programmers and system administrators, handled news media, and managed the web site. I was also the technical lead, designing and managing the implementation of the client-side and server-side software, the database, and the server hardware architecture.
