Superconducting Magnets are today an essential equipment for HEP research. The high magnetic fields attainable by using the current densities in the coils of 50-500 A/mm2 allow increasing the bending strength for charged particles, enabling to reach higher energy and luminosity of circular collider and to have better momentum resolution in particle detectors. The talk will review the basic properties of superconductivity, and its fascinating phenomenology, and will show how it can be used in particle terms for conductors. Then a review of the main characteristics of the LHC superconducting magnets (both for the accelerator and detectors) will be given. A perspective of future developments for new more powerful accelerators based on very high field magnets will be eventually presented.
