The use of high-energy particle beams for particle physics research inevitably brings with it the exposure of individuals to ionizing radiation either escaping from the shielded structures of the accelerators and from activated material as well as the production and release of radioactive substances into the environment. The lecture will discuss some fundamental aspects of radiation effects on living matter, concepts of practical radiation protection of individuals and the environment and corresponding regulations. Radiation protection issues specific for high-energy accelerators and CERN in particular will also be presented.
