Search technology is fundamental in transforming ever increasing amounts of internal and external data into useful information. The amount of primary, scientific and administrative data available to researchers, administrators and analysts creates environments characterized by information overload.

CERN is presently implementing a search solution based on the product of the Norwegian company FAST, one of the leading companies in search technologies. As an introduction, a brief overview of the CERN Search service, that is based on the FAST ESP solution, will be given.

In the main part of the presentation, Torstein Thorsen, will present scenarios, concepts and developments in the area of information access technology. He will give an insight in the evolution and the future of search technology. Furthermore, he will address aspects of information discovery and metadata extraction for scientific documents, data cleansing, ad hoc data analysis and visualization, and processing and search solutions for complex structured data.
