Description

It is well known that high intensity proton beams can damage material. The extend of possible damage for present accelerators such as LHC, and future accelerators such as FCC can only be addressed by simulation tools. To validate the tools, experiments on beam matter heating have been performed at the HiRadMat facility using the 440 GeV SPS proton beam irradiating extended copper cylinders. These experiments have confirmed the existence of the hydrodynamic tunneling of ultra relativistic protons and their hadronic shower in solid targets. These results are of considerable importance to the machine protection design as the range of the protons and their shower is substantially increased due to the hydrodynamic tunneling effect. Simulations have shown that the penetration length of the 7 TeV LHC protons and their hadronic shower in solid matter could be several 10 meters, while the 50 TeV FCC protons together with their shower can penetrate up to a few hundred meters in solid material due to this effect.
