      Regional support operations model

      Dear Maite and colleagues,

Next week is the official presentation to the ROC managers of the Regional Operations Model : REGOPS model. A presentation followed by discussion will summarize the main points from the document available at

      https://edms.cern.ch/document/971628/1

We present in this document the outcome of a working group - pole1 -, part the regular grid operator on duty in EGEE project - COD - gathering the experience of the first four federations that have set in place some operations at the regional level. The model has reached a consensus among the global COD community at last COD-18 meeting at EGEE'08. We outline the assumptions of this model, and present the model itself together with modifications in the procedure and dedicated COD tools required. Principles are proposed, keeping in mind that detailed operations procedures will be completed as we go along. Detailed roadmap will be tuned according to the feedback by the ROC managers and readiness of tools: At first, this model has to be tested in real conditions in parallel with the current model with 4-5 federations in order to go on with the stability of the operations and to assess its validity.

The Regional Support Model is meant to address the way the current operations model could be handled on a distributed format within the course of EGEE-III. Regional support set up dedicated technical teams close to the sites for efficient support and handle what is monitored by COD shifts now in the scope of a given region in the next future.
Regions will be in charge with their local operations up to the point where emergency or global services are involved, and where the escalation process applied to incidents within the region proves ineffective. At this point, we separate regional operations from a central layer in operations. This will enable to test the model and the workload that remain to the charge of a central layer in order to insure the stability and reliability of the infrastructure. At the same time, this will help with the scalability and sustainability constraints of the operations model of a production grid at the end of EGEE-III.

      Best regards,

      Hélène.
