Hyperfine Structure Constant of the Neutron Halo Nucleus 11Be+

Description
The hyperfine splitting of ground state 11Be+ has been measured by laser-microwave double resonance spectroscopy for trapped and laser cooled beryllium ions. The single valence neutron of 11Be+ is known to have a large distribution around the core nucleus 10Be. Since a neutron does not have electric charge, optical observation is difficult. However the neutron has a negative magnetic moment and the hyperfine structure constant is sensitive to the nuclear magnetization, which directly indicates this halo neutron distribution. This is known as the Bohr-Weisskopf effect which we measured in precision measurement .
