Description

ATS Seminar jointly organised with Isolde

Work at institutes such as CERN impacts on many aspects of society and the economy, underpinning the safe use of nuclear power and developments in nuclear medicine. For example, nuclear data are key to ensuring accurate patient dosimetry for cancer therapy and the safe disposal of radioactive waste. Measurements of nuclear data are normally only accepted by the evaluators for inclusion in international databases if they are traceable to the primary measurement standards held at national measurement institutes.

This seminar will outline how the international measurement system operates, the role of national measurement institutes, how a primary standard of radioactivity is realised and how it is possible to demonstrate traceability of measurements to primary standards. The presentation will also cover the National Physical Laboratory’s work in measuring nuclear decay data and the new NPL-Surrey gamma array that is being developed.

ATS Seminars Organisers: H. Burkhardt (BE), M. Modena (TE), T. Stora (EN)

Coffee / tea will be served after the seminar in room 31-3-009
