Description

The purpose of this session is to provide a basic introduction to the concepts of Grid Computing, an introduction to the EGEE architecture, and brief description of the process of submitting a job using gLite middleware. The session will also include a short demo, submitting jobs to EGEE using the P-Grade portal.

The course will be assume that the participants have no prior knowledge of Grid Computing, providing them a basic idea of the value of Grids, and their importance in providing large processing facilities for furthering e-Science projects.

This session is an accompaniment to the 4th EGEE User Forum which takes place in Catania 2-6 march 2009.

Registration


The tutorial is outside of the main Conference program and additional registration is needed. There is no fee for this event. If you wish to register to the event, please register here . Venue and getting there


The training event will be held in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Catania.

You can find full details on how to get the to the University here, however, for your information directions from centre of Catania (railway station) are:
"Take one of the buses no. 432, or 449, or 628 to the "Città Universitaria". Bus tickets must be bought before entering the bus, at newstands or tobacconists. (Two newstands are located inside the Station). Tickets cost about 0.80 euro each. Remember to stamp the ticket upon entering the bus. Enter the University Campus through the main gate, turn to the left, and "climb" the hill to the first crossing (after about 100 meters). At this crossing, turn to the left and walk for about 80 meters. The Department building is on your left (see picture)." Inside the building signs will indicate the way to the training room.

Please Note - This short 2 hour course will finish at 11.00, allowing at least 2 hours for participants to make their way back into the centre of Catania, to the User Forum venue at Le Ciminiere Convention Center (which is very close to the central railway station).



Infrastructure

During the second part of the course attendees will execute jobs and workflows on the GILDA t-infrastructure of the EGEE Grid. Attendees will be provided with computers to perform this practical part. Alternatively you can also use your own laptop for this part of the training. If you decide to do so then please make sure that you have Web browser and Java plug-in installed and please send your MAC address to rmcconne AT nesc.ac.uk, who will arrange for your wireless access.

      Introduction to Grids & EGEE

      Grid Computing is intended to enable coordinated resource sharing & problemsolving in dynamic, multi-institutional virtual organizations. It deals with huge amount of distributed computation, data and information resources. By using the provided network connections, it tries to give the impression of having coherent virtual computing centre.

      Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE) is currently the largest multi-disciplinary grid infrastructure in the world, which brings together more than 140 institutions to produce a reliable and scalable computing resource available to the European and global research community. At present, it consists of approximately 300 sites in 50 countries and gives its 10,000 users access to 80,000 CPU cores around-the-clock.

      Submitting Jobs via P-GRADE Portal (Practical)

      P-GRADE Portal provides an intuitive and service rich graphical environment for the development, execution and monitoring of data-driven computational workflows and workflow based parameter studies. Components of P-GRADE Portal act as extensions of the gLite (and Globus) middleware and provide human-centered services for grid application developers and grid end users. P-GRADE Portal is one of the "Recommended External Software for EGEE CommuniTies" tools.

      After a short lecture that introduces the most important user interfaces of P-GRADE Portal, the attendees will have the opportunity to execute computational workflows on gLite grids with this tool.
