A CMS Virtual Visit took place on 25 Apr 2016 in the framework of the inauguration of the first Science Café in Nicosia, Cyprus. This event was marked by the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, along with three ministers, the Mayor of Nicosia and more than 150 members of general public.
During the CMS Virtual Visit, CMS Deputy Spokesperson, Prof. Paris Sphicas, and Head of CERN Associated and Non-Member States, Prof. Emmanuel Tsesmelis, praised the contribution of Cyprus in the experiments carried out in CERN and noted that the Cyprus University team led by the Professor of Physics and Head of the Cyprus Experimental High Energy Physics Group Panos Razis contributed to the analysis of events that led to the discovery of the Higgs boson. A short tour to the CMS experiment was then given by Dr. Angelos Alexopoulos, member of the CMS Communications Group.
To note that on 1 April 2016, the Republic of Cyprus became an Associate Member State of CERN in pre-stage to Membership.
