Description

The aim of this seminar is to provide a short overview of the realistic shell-model approach, in which the valence-space Hamiltonian is derived by means of many body perturbation theory from the underlying nuclear forces. Significant progress has been made within this field in the last two decades and a number of calculations have been performed for nuclei in various mass regions both close to or far from the valley of stability, providing an accurate description of the experimental data. First, a sketch of the current state of the art of the theoretical framework of this approach is given, focusing on the main ingredients and most relevant recent advances. Then, some selected results for neutron-rich nuclei, which are currently the subject of great experimental interest, are discussed.
