Description

The beam alignment requirements for future particle accelerators are more and more challenging. In particular, the next generation of lepton colliders requires the development of new solutions for the fiducialisation and alignment of the main components (Magnets, RF cavities, Beam Position Monitors) to an accuracy never achieved before for such big series of components. PACMAN (http://pacman.web.cern.ch/ ) is an acronym for “a study on Particle Accelerator Components’ Metrology and Alignment to the Nanometre scale”. It is an Innovative Doctoral Program, funded by the EU and CERN, and hosted by CERN. The technical aim of the project is to improve the alignment accuracy of the accelerator components, considering the specific case of the CLIC linear collider. This will be achieved by developing new methods and tools addressing several alignment steps simultaneously, in order to gain time, accuracy and decrease the associated cost. The control of these parameters is crucial in prevision of future potential production and installation of several thousands of components as demanded by any future accelerator project.

After an introduction of the Project and its main technical challenges, the advancement of the four technical Work Packages will be presented: WP1 on Metrology and alignment, focus on new development of optical sensors and in the optimization of metrology systems based on FSI (Frequency Scanning Interferometry) and Micro-triangulation; WP2 on magnetic measurements, focus on magnetic measurement systems based on the oscillating wire field-measuring technique, and on innovative development of miniature rotating search coils;  WP3 on uncertainty estimation for precision mechanics, development of dedicated seismic sensors for beam based feedback operation and of new nano-positioning system based on long range actuators in flexural guides; and finally WP4 focus on microwave technology developments to prove sub-micrometre spatial resolution for BPM (Beam Position Monitor) absolute alignment and on the development of new methods for the measurement of radio-frequency accelerating cavities axis based on stretched wires systems.
