SLC5 package lists
Present: Jan van Eldik, Ulrich Schwickerath, Matthias Schroder, Giacomo Tenaglia, Sophie Lemaitre, Ricardo Silva, Veronique Lefebure (minutes)
SLC5 package lists issues to be discussed:
1. We currently have 2 sets: the ones provided by Jan I. and currently in production, and the ones provided later by Matthias, not used in prod, available under /usertest/new_package_list. Which ones do we want at the end ?
2. How to automate the update of the lists
3. How to get a pure x86_64 installation
1. Package list content
- Ulrich has tried Matthias lists but hit some dependency issues.
- With SLC5.3, Matthias will provide new package lists
- Matthias lists
- are produced using the comps.xml files to which some corrections are applied such as
- Removing packages that should not be there (according to our usage)
- Correcting wrong dependencies
- Are "slow" to produce:
- 30 minutes for 2 archs
- not yet automated (scripts to be run manually)
- Need to be adapted each time there is a change upstream
- are produced using the comps.xml files to which some corrections are applied such as
- Currently lxplus/lxbuild use Jan's lists, which contain too many packages and which start some non-wanted services --> Ulrich had to remove/stop them (see list in *). This should be done at the package list level, and not at the cluster level.
- Some slc4 or 32bit compat packages had to be added on the request of the experiments. This is currently done at the cluster level, but common templates should be used in stead.(**)
- How many of such compat packages should we accept to add ? Shall we converge to a stable list ?
2. Automation of package lists update
Matthias will have to work on that
3. Pure 64bit installations
There are still a few 32bit packages appearing in the core/base lists (about 20). They should be removed by the script. To be tested with the next release.
Actions
- Sophie will send the list of non-wanted services to Matthias (see * below)
- Matthias will provide new package lists for SLC5.3 and put them under CDB pretest/ namespace.
- The lxplus service manager will test these new lists and give feedback to Matthias
- Ulrich will create the addons compat templates (see ** below)
- The above will be reiterated till a satisfactory set of package lists is obtained. They will then be moved to CDB test/ namespace.
AOB
-
Giacomo asked how to proceed when a new package is needed which is not available on Swrep (such as shibboleth) ? Should the new release be requested or provided to LinuxSoft or directly uploaded to Swrep ?
-
Jan vE will check if the "addon" repository mechanism is still functional and can be used for that.
-
VL: Since the LinuxSoft repository is automatically mirrored onto Swrep, it can be convenient to provide new packages, which may be of public general use, to the Linux team
-
JvE: yes, but the Linux Team has to be able to accept/reject such packages, and one also has to pay attention to possible dependencies
-
-
When is the next schedule upgrade ? No date is defined yet.
-
Will it include slc5.3 ? If yes, a new version of PrepareInstall needs to be deployed at the same time.
-
Experiments are asking for gcc 4.3

(**) Addons compat templates were created by Ulrich after this meeting:
prod/site/cern_cc/rpms/addons/slc4_compat.tpl
prod/site/cern_cc/rpms/addons/slc4_compat_devel.tpl
They are used now by lxbatch, lxplus and lxbuild (SLC5 only)
