The IPPOG Fall Meeting 2016 will take place at CERN from Thursday, 10th November until Saturday, 12th November 2016. Please register and select from a few choices in the registration form.
We propose four panel topics.
Please select one where you can focus on some aspect of an outreach activity in your country, experiment or project. We will limit each panel to 11 people to guarantee a good representation for all topics. There will be a new set of panels with each IPPOG meeting, allowing you full coverage over time.
1. Special events and exhibitions: Have you been involved in a special outreach event; what is happening in the world of exhibitions?
2. Broadening of the physics scope of MC: Making IPPOG more inclusive is becoming more relevant with new members bringing more diversity and expertise. Broadening the physics scope of the MC beyond the LHC experiments is compelling and could mean including air shower experiments, neutrino physics, B-physics (Auger, Belle II, DUNE, Icecube,…).
3. Ethics in particle physics: As physicists, we may think particle physics is naturally non-problematic when it comes to ethical questions. This may be a bit naïve as high costs, use of resources, the real or perceived dangers of large scale projects, and the relevance of fundamental research are all causing questions from society that need to be addressed for our current projects and more so in view of possible future projects of even larger scales.
4. Table top experiments: An opportunity to show experiments or activities, which offer insight and excitement to students. It’s “playing” and experiencing particle physics (examples: little cloud chamber for 20 euros, mystery box almost for free, play-dough with a mystery core poked with a toothpick, and other more involved examples).
When you register, please select the panel in which you would like to participate. Prepare a few (2-3) slides before your travel. The panelists will have time to discuss together on Friday afternoon to compile their views, advance ideas and prepare for the panel presentation on Saturday.
Further, there will be four working group discussions:
1. WG on Cosmic Rays Going Global
2. WG on Explaining PP Hot Topics to Lay Audience
3. WG on MC in new countries
4. Publications and Speakers Committee
Please chose which working group you will be participating in when registering.
PS. If you are a standing member of a particular WG, your choice is limited.
IPPOG portrait session
Thursday after the IPPOG session at 6 pm you will have a chance to have your portrait taken for the new IPPOG web page. Representatives and associates are invited. Please have your photo taken if you didn't do so at last year’s IPPOG meeting, or take a new photo if you would like to improve the one you took a year ago. You can download last year’s photos in the registration form. You can also come along if you just would like to enjoy the drinks and finger food that we will provide. Please bring a typical object with you that will personalise your portrait even more.
IPPOG dinner
The IPPOG dinner will be offered in the 'Cite du Temps', a beautiful building in the heart of Geneva on Friday evening.
We will organize an informal dinner on Thursday evening. You will be responsible for your own bill.
Visit
Moreover, this year you will have an opportunity to visit the new Microcosm exhibition or CERN's 600 MeV Synchrocyclotron, now an EPS historic site.
We are looking forward to see you all at CERN in November!
