Description

Following the concept of the TTC high Q meetings, the TTC thin film working group is a forum to present and discuss new results, ideas, technical progress and challenges related to SRF thin films and new materials.

The content of this meetings is considered unpublished and preliminary and is not intended for external reference or distrubution.

Please write an email to srf-thinfilm-wg@cern.ch to get onto the agenda and/or mailinglist.

INVESTIGATION OF NUCLEATION STEP IN THE TWO STEP DIFFUSION COATING OF Nb3Sn ON Nb 15m

Nb3Sn is a superconducting material with a critical temperature and predicted superheating field nearly twice that of niobium. Accordingly, it promises higher operating temperature and accelerating gradient of SRF accelerator cavities, resulting in significant cost reduction. Nb3Sn cavities are currently prepared by depositing a few micron thick layer of Nb3Sn inside the niobium cavity formed by diffusion coating. This technique, first developed in University of Wuppertal in 1970’s involves two¬ steps: nucleation (with SnCl2) followed by deposition (with Sn). Nucleation is considered to be an important step for the quality of final coatings, but a clear relevance has not been established yet. To gain more understanding of nucleation and its effect on the subsequent coating, we investigated the activated surface using different material characterization approaches. The nucleation step was found to produce a low (< 10%) coverage of tin particles, as determined by SEM/EDS, while XPS and SAM discovered more coverage of tin film.
