Description
Well focused high intensity particle beams deposit large amounts of energy within the material they irradiate. For beam intercepting devices (BID), where structural integrity and lifetime are important issues, it is of interest to understand the dynamic response of the target, especially for bunched beam time distributions. While the Monte Carlo code FLUKA provides the energy deposited by the particle beam in a static target, the explicit hydro-code ANSYS AUTODYN ® is used to model the non-linear dynamic response of the target.

This talk presents results of simulations with ANSYS AUTODYN for liquid and solid targets exposed to pulsed particle beams at ISOLDE-CERN and GSI.
