Description

The best understood tool to deal with strong dynamics -- effective Lagrangian methods -- does not apply for scale-invariant systems such as the materials near a quantum critical point. AdS/CFT methods can be understood as a type of effective field theory method that adapts to these cases. I will illustrate how this operates in the simple example of the elastic response for a (holographic) critical material. I will also discuss the predictive reach of this approach.
