Meeting on D2 Heat exchanger design and integration – 01/06/2017

Purpose: The purpose of the meeting was to assess the actual design constraints on the baseline design of the new fin type heat exchanger and the back up solution based copper heat exchanger

  • D2 Cold mass CAD model

N. Peray has presented the actual D2 cold mass CAD design and the available space at each cold mass extremity

  • HEX baseline and integration :

The new heat exchanger baseline allows to keep only one variant of D2 cryostat being independent of the LHC slope.

As discussed in the meeting, due to the large static heat load on D2 and the location of HEX opposite to the ‘hot' IP side, its design unlike in the Q4, Q5 standalone magnet requires a non standard technology with large surface area of about 1-2 m2.

It was mentioned that in case the new HEX design is not feasible for any reason like manufacture, integration space it should be kept the possibility to integrate the past LHC HEX type relying on copper tube. The current D2 CAD model confirmed that the Cu HEX tube can still be integrated providing space at the cryostat extremity is large enough to house the phase separator. The actual space size on the IP side is about 330 mm and 500 mm on QQS side.

  • Milestone, Actions

- Rob Van Weldeeren and Antonio Perin shall check the integration space in the common QQS area and what shall be the available candidate fo the actual HEX technology. In case of phase separator a pumping return line should be integrated in the cryostat.

- The date by which the choice of HEX technology needs to be done is mid November 2017 so that the design of the test cryostat can be finalised by D Duarte Ramos.

- Rob Van Weldeeren foresees some qualification cold test of the new HEX design with some representative high heat thermal load.
