Activities of the Quench Behaviour Team: the LHC towards 7 TeV
by
In 2015 the 1232 LHC dipoles have been commissioned to 11.08 kA, necessary to operate at 6.5 TeV energy per proton beam. The commissioning carried out by the MP3 team required about 170 quenches to reach this target, equivalent to having the whole set of the LHC dipoles operating at 20% margin on the loadline.
The Quench Behaviour Team has been formed in spring 2015 to have a deeper look in the training data, mainly with two tasks: giving a forecast for the quenches needed to reach energies larger than 6.5 TeV, and correlating the behaviour of the slower training magnets in terms of construction features. In this seminar we will give an outlook of the main results discussed in the 19 meetings that occurred in period July 2015-June 2017.
We will focus on the quench distributions, on the existence of batches in the production, on the differences in the production procedures, on the effect of the testing strategy, and on the memory after a thermal cycle. We will give also a list of possible directions for future works, waiting for the 7 TeV training campaign that will take place in 2019-2020.
