Description

Abstract:

30 years after their discoveries, high Tc cuprate materials have been made into practical forms of conductors suitable for making superconducting magnets.  Their potentials are tremendous, making possible devices such as 1.3 GHz NMR spectrometers and 20 T class dipole magnets that are impossible with current Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn technologies.  However, they are imperfect conductors.  For example, all three high Tc cuprate materials (Bi-2212, Bi-2223, REBCO) are brittle and all currently expensive.  This talk will build around the development of Bi-2212 into a practical engineering superconductor to illustrate and dissect the challenges of using these materials, and attempt to answer question of how to build powerful magnets using these imperfect conductors.
