Hello,

In reading some of the preliminary SSC work plans, I have a few general comments to improve them.

First, the reason for having the SSCs at all is to create a hub of activity and expertise to coordinate and to manage the use of grid technology (and the grid infrastructure) by a particular scientific community. Common goals include: 1) providing a "repository" of experience for safeguarding grid knowledge/expertise in the community and 2) deepening grid knowledge for current users and expanding the number of people within the community using grid technology. The attached overview of the proposal has some concrete topics that should be treated by each SSC. (See the last section.)

Second, the objectives of a work package need to describe an outcome or goal, not an activity. For example, a "liason" between groups is not an objective; "encouraging/promoting/providing bi-lateral communication to ensure that service X conforms to our needs" is. This has further implications for the rest of the work plan. The deliverables and milestones should by clearly tied to the stated objectives and measure progress towards achieving them. The risks must be those unfortunate incidents that would prevent those objectives from being achieved or achieved in a timely manner. Issues that the work package addresses within the community are justifications for the work package, not risks!

Third, in reading the work plans I see that we are missing a section on a common strategy for the SSC's work plan. Please add a paragraph before the Section 1.1 about the general organization of the work plan and the strategy for meeting the general aims on an SSC for your community.
