IdeaSquare invites you to discover how multidisciplinary collaboration and rapid prototyping is shaping innovation.

Access is only open to those with a CERN badge, but everyone is welcome to join the keynote talks via webcast. 

On October 25, IdeaSquare at CERN is hosting The Other Side of Innovation, a day to discover what the space has to offer and how you can get involved through talks, showcase of projects, workshops and tours.

Professor of technology and innovation at ETH Zürich, Stefano Brusoni, will give a talk on the divergent process of innovation while Bruno Herbelin, deputy director of the Center for Neuroprosthetics at EPFL, will immerse us on the power of embodiment of virtual reality and how researchers can best use this new technology.

Projects developed at IdeaSquare’s rapid prototyping facilities will be showcased through the day. Among them, discover prototypes addressing societal problems, developed by multidisciplinary student teams in collaboration with researchers at CERN, through the Challenge Based Innovation program.

Participants who sign up in advance, will be able to take part in introductory workshops in 3D printing, robotics programming, and human-centered design.

For those interested in meeting new people, LunchCollider will serve to match lunch attendees during the day of the event. 

If you’re interested in learning more about experimental innovation and rapid prototyping or want to find out what IdeaSquare is you can also join one of the tours of the space. Registration is not required for talks or tours, but will help you to secure a seat for the event. 

The event will take place at IdeaSquare, located at building 3179 at point 01, next to the Globe of Science and Innovation from 10:00 to 19:00.

Workshops are currently full, but if you would like to be added to a waiting list for a specific workshop, you can do so here. 

We are also exploring the option of adding additional workshops throughout the day, and at a later date.

      He has previously worked with the ROOT team at CERN, and is currently part of the Doctoral Program in Biotechnology and Bioengineering at EPFL, where he is part of the Crowd AI team.

      CrowdAI connects data science experts and enthusiasts with open data to solve specific problems, through challenges. The recent breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence research do make a lot of headlines, and a lot more promises. But can any of these breakthroughs help your research?

      Markus Nordberg is the Head of Resources Development of the Development and Innovation Unit at CERN, Switzerland. He is currently involved in launching a sensor and imaging R&D initiative called ATTRACT (www.attract-eu.org) aiming at both scientific and societal impact.

      He also manages the new IdeaSquare initiative at CERN (cern.ch/Ideasquare) that hosts detector R&D and society-driven MSc-student projects. Prior to this function, he served 12 years as the Resources Coordinator of the ATLAS project at CERN (www.atlas.ch). He has also served as Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Centrum voor Bedrijfseconomie, Faculty ESP-Solvay Business School, University of Brussels, and as a member of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society and the Association of Finnish Parliament Members and Scientists, TUTKAS. He has a degree both in Physics and in Business Administration.

      Marzio Nessi is the project leader of the Neutrino Programme at CERN. "The neutrino platform pulls together a community that is scattered across the world and CERN has committed significant resources to support R&D in all aspects of neutrino research. CERN is using the organisational model of the LHC to help in developing an international project on US soil and to contribute to neutrino programmes in Japan and elsewhere.

    • The neuroscience of Virtual Reality (Talk by Bruno Herbelin)

      Bruno Herbelin, Deputy Director of the Center for Neuroprosthetics at EPFL, will immerse us in the power of embodiment of virtual reality and how researchers can best use this new technology. Immersion in virtual reality is challenging the multisensory brain mechanisms underlying the integration of bodily signals that are building up the experience of perceiving the world from an embodied perspective.

      Recent progress in cognitive neuroscience of bodily self-consciousness were based on the ability of technology to manipulate these mechanisms; what I propose to explore is how this research provides a deeper understanding of immersion, embodiment and sense of presence.

      Dr Domenico Vicinanza (Anglia Ruskin University and GEANT, Cambridge UK) and Dr Genevieve Williams (University of Exeter, Exeter, UK).

      As a music composer and researcher in auditory display, Domenico worked with organizations like CERN and NASA, creating music from scientific data.

      He has been involved in the application of grid technologies for science and the arts since the late 1990s, chairing the ASTRA (Ancient instrument Sound/Timbre Reconstruction Application) project for the reconstruction of musical instruments by means of computer models using the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI.eu).

      Giovanni, is the Group Leader of the Knowledge Transfer Group (IPT-KT) at CERN. Prior to this, Giovanni worked for 10 years in CERN’s Microelectronics Group (Physics Department), where he designed several low-noise low-power analog and mixed signal VLSI circuits for High-Energy Physics applications.

    • Thinking About Design Thinking (Talk by Stefano Brusoni Professor of Technology and Innovation Management at ETH Zürich)

      Professor Stefano Brusoni (http://www.timgroup.ethz.ch/en/people/sbrusoni), will give a talk on Thinking about design thinking: Evidence from the field and from the lab.

      Stefano Brusoni is Professor of Technology and Innovation Management at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich (ETH Zürich). He coordinates the TIMGROUP - the new Chair of Technology and Innovation Management at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics (D-MTEC).

      Sefano holds a DPhil in Science and Technology Studies from SPRU at the University of Sussex (UK). He has looked at the emergence of alternative product architectures and how they explain firms’ evolutionary dynamics, in terms of their vertical boundaries and long-term viability. His collaboration with Andrea Prencipe has generated a number of papers on modularity, its causes and strategic consequences. Together, they have investigated how firms can leverage on modularity to rely on strategic outsourcing without loosing their ability of introducing new product architectures.

      More recently, he has started studying how individual-level differences matter to explain where new architectures or, more generally, new set of rules (procedures, routines) come from.

      Prior to entering academia, Stefano worked as a firefighter.
