Description

High stored energy densities in 16 T FCC dipole designs cause high average temperature increase and high hot spot temperature during a quench. Because these high field magnets are under high Lorentz forces in operation, they need strong pre-loading. During a quench the winding pack expands while the support structure keeps its thermal shrinkage and the pre-load and consequently the loading of the magnet is strengthened. Therefore, the study of quench mechanics, i.e. the evolution of stress state during quench and at its end, is of special importance in these magnets. In this presentation, we consider the quench mechanics of the early state designs of Cos-theta and Block FCC dipoles that are studied within the EuroCirCol project. Furthermore, we present guidelines for quench mechanics studies and discuss what kind of new research opportunities there are around this area.
