The ion beam loss induced desorption is a performance limitation for low charge state heavy ion accelerators. If charge exchanged ions get lost onto the beam pipe, desorption of gas is stimulated resulting in a pressure increase inside of the synchrotron and a dramatically reduction of the beam life time. In the first part of the talk, the experimental investigations on ion induced desorption will be reviewed. The focus will be set on material investigations with the elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) that were performed at GSI and have drawn a clear picture of the desorption process. In the second part a theoretical approach to calculate desorption yields (desorbed gas molecules per incident ion), developed on the base of the experimental results, will be presented.
