D. Schulte reminded that the registration deadline for the CLIC Workshop is coming soon and that anyone who likes to attend is supposed to register.
D.S. showed some slides on the impact of running CLIC at energies as low as 50% of the nominal energy. This was requested by particle physics to perform calibration and energy scans. Two possibilities seem to be feasible without loosing too much luminosity: increased pulse length or increased repetition rate. A. Grudiev asked if the loss in RF-to-beam efficiency is taken into account. According to D.S. this is taken into account only partially.
A. Grudiev discussed the impact on the cavity design by changing the bunch charge. It might become necessary to re-optimize the cavity geometry if CLIC should be optimized for lower energies. D.S. said that such a change would not be made before the CDR, if at all.
R. Tomas, B. Jeanneret, L. Rinolfi and F. Stulle informed about the impact of lowering the energy on different sub-systems of CLIC. In the BDS the final quadrupoles would have to be exchanged. The DB delay loop would have to allow different delays, i.e. must have to be adjustable in length. In the MB injector the performance of the gun laser and the positron target would have to be higher. In the RTML the klystrons would have to deliver pulses at a higher repetition rate. In general, diagnostics and kickers might require better performance.
F. Stulle showed some ideas how to improve the DB phase correction scheme. Splitting the acceleration and the phase correction in two feed-forward systems seems to be of advantage. Then the bunch lengths could be fully compressed in front of the second acceleration step. Then the combiner rings might require a slight uncompression to reduce CSR. The re-compression in front of the PETS would just revert this and the phase jitter which is induced in the uncompression stage. The feed-forward could be simplified. B.J., D.S. and F.S. discussed how to proceed. CR1 should be optimized to cope with shorter bunches.
J. Snuverink showed results of the impact of magnetic stray fields in the long transfer line. Purely random errors seem to be o.k.. But periodic errors can get into resonance and spoil emittance and transverse bunch position completely. Some more work is required to fully understand the behavior of the transverse bunch position.
