Description

The First Sharjah International Conference on Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology (FISICPAC) will be held at the University of Sharjah (UoS), Sharjah, United Arab Emirates from November 11 to 13, 2018.

The conference is organized within the framework of the ongoing UoS-CERN-ICTP research collaborations. Its program addresses the interests of theorists, phenomenologists and experimentalists working within the realms of Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology.

The scientific program of the conference will include presentation of research findings by the participants via oral and poster sessions, in addition to series of overviews and plenary talks given by pioneering physicists, followed by an international training program for science and engineering students, organized by the Physics Without Frontiers ICTP program. The training will provide the participating students for the first time an intensive introduction to the related physics and detectors engineering design at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and its experiments.

The preliminary Scientific program is now available.

Furthermore, the conference will provide a platform for the exchange of new ideas and experiences, to promote and establish a collaborative framework of researchers and academic partners along the research fields available at the University of Sharjah.

Topics discussed at the conference will cover the following research areas:

  • Particle Physics and its future.
  • Higgs Physics.
  • Direct and indirect Dark Matter Searches.
  • Cosmology.
  • String theory.
  • Dark Energy in the Universe.

Quick overview of CERN. Founded in 1954 CERN is today the largest international center for High Energy Physics in the world. The talk will cover various aspects, from history to the future of the organization. CERN has three pillars: fundamental research, technology and education. The talk will go through all of them. Based on recent scientific successes, CERN is building its future. The options for the next few decades will be presented.

Particle Physics: Past, Present and Future 45m

In this talk I will review the current status and prospects of particle physics. In particular, I will discuss the Standard Model and the motivation for the Higgs boson, review its discovery, and then discuss theoretical and experimental attempts to understand its nature. I will also discuss reasons to expect new physics beyond the Standard Model, including in particular the nature of dark matter. Finally I mention ideas for possible future colliders.

Physics with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC 45m M3 - Al-Masudi

        M3 - Al-Masudi

        University of Sharjah

With the announcement of the discovery of the Higgs boson in July 2012 by the two general purpose experiments ATLAS and CMS at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, particle physics has entered a new era.
Until today the experiments have collected large data sets at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV (Run 1, 2010-2012) and at 13 TeV (Run 2, since 2015). These data allow for
precise measurements of the properties of the discovered Higgs boson as well as for precise measurements of Standard Model processes and parameters. In parallel the large data set has been explored to search for physics beyond the Standard Model.
In the present talk an overview on the most important physics results at the LHC is given. In addition, future prospects of the experimental programme at the High-Luminosity LHC (HLLHC) are presented, together with the planned upgrade programme of the ATLAS detector to cope with the largely increased luminosity and data rate at the HL-LHC.

String theory, M theory and Dark Matter 45m

We begin with an elementary introduction to string and M theory.
We then introduce the concept of hidden sectors. We will then provide
        arguments as to why:
        a) WIMP's are generically unstable, so unlikely to be dark matter
        b) dark matter likely resides in the hidden sector
        c) interactions between Standard Model and hidden sector particles are
        generically present.

In this talk, I will discuss some ideas for explaining the smallness of neutrino masses and the connection with some of the unsolved problems in cosmology; namely the nature of the dark matter and the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe.

The Importance of White Dwarfs in Modern Astrophysics 45m M3 - Al-Masudi

        M3 - Al-Masudi

        University of Sharjah

White dwarfs are the remnants of the evolution of most stars in the galaxy, all those up to masses of around 8 times that of the Sun. Study of their production sheds light on enrichment of the interstellar medium, through mass loss from the progenitor, while detection of the coolest examples provides estimates of the age of the Galaxy and, by implication, an independent lower limit on the age of the Universe. They are also implicated in the the production of type Ia supernovae which underpin measurements of the expansion of the Universe, its age and the Nobel Prize winning discovery of “Dark Energy”. More recently, we have realised that they provided an opportunity to probe possible variations of the fine structure constant in strong gravity.
This talk will review our understanding of the physics of white dwarfs and discuss key results from a variety of observations including those made by the Hubble Space Telescope and the recent second data release from the Gaia astrometry mission.
