Dark matter candidates with mass below a GeV exhibit some of the key ideas of the ''WIMP miracle'', yet have been relatively unexplored until recently. In this mass range, there is a landscape of interesting candidates that require new kinds of detection techniques. I will discuss ideas and prospects to search for sub-GeV dark matter with direct detection, below the typical thresholds of current experiments. I will highlight several examples covering the meV-GeV mass range, including prospects for absorption of bosonic dark matter as well as proposals to detect scattering of sub-MeV dark matter.
