Description

Brief Description: Much of Artificial Intelligence Research is done by a handful of elite researchers. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of really talented developers and engineers stand behind a mental block that they need a lot of advanced skills to be able to contribute to Artificial Intelligence Research, or even to use Artificial Intelligence in their own work.
This talk aims to clarify the myth, and convince these hundreds of thousands of developers and engineers that they indeed have a lot to contribute to Artificial Intelligence Research, and they do not need a lot of advanced skills to be able to do the same.

And we do so by telling the story of how hundreds of people all over the world came together to teach a simulated skeleton how to walk using reinforcement learning, and to solve many other such difficult problems on crowdAI.org. The attendance of this lecture is optional.

Lecturer's short bio:

Sharada Prasanna Mohanty is a Doctoral Researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Marcel Salathé at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. An opensource enthusiast, his interests and curiosities lie around exploiting Machine Learning for a range of real world problems, from detection of diseases from images; to designing agents which can teach musculoskeletal models how to walk. He is co-founder of crowdAI (https://crowdai.org), a platform for organising machine learning challenges around numerous problems in science.
