Description

The Netherlands' Physical Society ("Nederlandse Natuurkundige Vereniging" or "NNV") is a Dutch national organization advocating and serving the interest of physics in the Netherlands, in education and (academic) research programs. It supports and binds people involved in physics and/or with a background in physics and simplifies communication between its members working in educational, research, industrial or governmental environments. The organization strongly supports outreach activities, especially for children at primary school and high-school level. One of the activities organized by the NNV are trips to research labs across western Europe (JARA/COSY in Aachen, BESSY/MPI/DLR/FHI  in Berlin, ILL/ESRF/EMBL in Grenoble, DESY in Hamburg, ESA in La Palma and IPP/INP in Greifswald and of course CERN in Geneva). See https://www.quarktravel.nl/ for more information.

High-school students following a science curriculum at high-school level, preparing for university studies, visit CERN on an annual basis. For six weeks, groups of 48 visitors are expected, including students from many different schools from all over the country.

Besides the standard curriculum, the students follow additional courses looking into more specific subjects like 'special relativity', 'quantum mechanics' and 'particle physics', research fields related to the work done at CERN.

The visit program covers two days at CERN and in Geneva. The groups always arrive on Wednesday evening by Dutch bus in Geneva and start the CERN program Thursday morning. Besides standard CERN Visits Service itineraries, additional lab visits are planned, as well as lectures and workshops.

CERN welcomes the students from all over the Netherlands in Geneva!

In a student-friendly environment, the participants will construct their own particle detector: a cloud chamber! The techniques and materials used to build the detector are amazingly simple and the participants will be flabbergasted by the results they obtain in this relatively short time. A wonderful experience which is always very much appreciated by the students!
